Cheri's Story Time
April is my Studio Spotlight on Cheri!
Cheri has been a part of my Design Team since 2017. She has been a Fabulous addition to my team as she always makes my images pop! Cheri is an incredibly talented card designer and colorist. I am blessed work along side her and call her friend.
Aside from being very creative and dependable, Cheri is sweet, kind, and compassionate! I'm pretty sure we connected quickly! She has been a joy to work with! Her designs are very recognizable...they are full of fabulous color combos and clean design and compostion. Everytime I see one of Cheri's cards, I just have to smile!
I created a Digi Doodle inspired by Cheri's love for puppies and most especially reading to her beautiful granddaughter. I tried to capture love and warmth in this sweet image called "Cheri's Story Time"
I thought it might be fun to interview Cheri a little and give you a chance to learn more about her! Not to mention a must take-a-peek into her FABLULOUS Craft Space!
Let's get to know Cheri!
DDS: Describe yourself in 3 words?
Cheri: I would say that I am Loyal, Compassionate and funny
DDS: What's your favourite Holiday and why?
Cheri: My favourite Holiday Is Christmas. I love all the decorations and decorating my house is my favourite thing to do at Christmas. I love the memories that are made over the holidays when family and friends get together.
DDS: Name something you love and why?
Cheri: I absolutely love to travel. I love that I get to spend quality time with my Husband and it’s exciting to visit new places, see the history and meet new people. We usually travel about 4-5 times a year and it’s always something I look forward to.
DDS: Did you grow up in a creative household?
Cheri: I did grow up in a creative household. My Mom crocheted, sewed, scrapbooked, did ceramics and decoupage. My Dad was creative in his own way building our family cottage from the ground up.
DDS: Were you encouraged to pursue your creativity?
Cheri: My parents always encouraged my Sister and I in anything we wanted to do. Although we did some crafts growing up, we spent our summers at the Cottage playing outside. (Canoeing, water skiing, biking) but our favourite thing to do was painting rocks.
DDS: What, or who, inspired you to start paper crafting?
Cheri: I guess my Mom started my card making obsession. She scrapbooked and I loved all the papers and embellishments. I didn’t want to get into the whole scrapbooking thing but she encouraged me to try card making instead. I was fascinated by her Cricut and my early cards were made using that. Then I found Amy Rysavy (Prairie Paper and Ink) online and that was it! I was hooked on stamping and Copic colouring.
DDS: How would you describe your paper crafting style?
Cheri: I would say that my style is lots of layers with fun bright papers. I have a 6x6 paper pad addiction LOL and find I always use at least 3 patterns on every card.
DDS: What is a typical day like for you?
Cheri: Since I am “retired” my days are pretty much mine. We have moved to a new “Adult Lifestyle” Community so I enjoy going to the different activities at the Rec centre such as Yoga and Pickle Ball. I also love to volunteer in my Community so at least once a week that’s where I am. You can usually find me in my Craft room at some point each day
DDS: When do you feel the most creative?
Cheri: I find I feel most creative in the morning. I think I feel refreshed from a good nights sleep and enjoy the relaxing “me” time in my Craft Room.
DDS: How do you get in the “Zone” while working on your projects?
Cheri: I usually grab a coffee and head to my Craft Room. I either put on music, or the TV and start colouring. I like to have the morning talk shows on in the background. I can listen and keep up to date on “gossip” lol.
DDS: Do you have a dedicated work space...if so, what is your
favourite part about it? If not ...what would your dream space look like?
Cheri: We moved into our Brand new home last June and I made sure to have a dedicated Craft area. I have a big room all to myself in our finished basement. It has tons of storage and workspace with a fun bright carpet. My favourite thing in my room is my “Side Board” that I bought at an Auction for $60.00. It’s solid and the heaviest piece of furniture I have ever lifted. It houses all my die cutting machines on top and all my bins of coloured cardstock in the cupboards. It also has 3 large drawers that I keep all my different types of papers for alcohol markers, pencils and watercolouring.
DDS: How do you organize your craft stash?
Cheri: I am all about organizing LOL. Just ask my crafty friends, they always tease me about all my labelled drawers and bins. My label maker is another of my favourite tools. I have lots of shelving units, drawers in my workspace, carts and plastic bin drawers. All these help me stay organized.
DDS: How do you...or do you...organize and plan your projects?
Cheri: I seldom start out with a plan. I usually start by picking the Designer Paper that I want to use and then colour my image to match. Then I decide on my layout. I often look at Pinterest for different card layouts and to get new ideas. I do organize which image will be coloured when. Since I am on a few DT’s it helps to plan monthly what needs to be done and when, then I start from there. I have a calendar on a clipboard that keeps me on track.
DDS: What is you favourite colour combo?
Cheri: I’d have to say that I love Teal and Pink together. For you Copic colourers out there, think the BG and RV families of markers.
DDS: What is your favourite crafting supply ...or what is one you could never do without?
Cheri: I would say that my Copic Markers are my favourite Craft Supply. It’s been an investment collecting them all but they are my favourite things to colour with. Now to just start getting all the refills LOL.
DDS: What draws you to Digi Doodles?
Cheri: I just love the way Dina draws her girls, with the “big” fun hair and adorable themes. I also love the digital paper and digital sentiments Dina has created. I was introduced to Dina through High Hopes Rubber Stamps, another company she designs for. Dina has always been so sweet to me and I love supporting her and Digi Doodle Designs.
DDS: What are your top 5 Favourite Digi Doodles?
DDS: If you couldn't paper craft, what would you be doing?
Cheri: I can’t imagine ever not paper crafting. It brings so much joy to my life and I have met so many fellow crafters through it all. I’ve made some incredible friendships that I cherish. I guess I would read more and increase my volunteering time.
DDS: What advice would you give someone just getting started in paper crafting?
Cheri: Don’t buy the paper unless you know what you will use it for LOL. When I first started I’d buy any and all paper. Then I realized that I had a huge stack that I had no plans for and never really would use. And of course if I did go to use it I wouldn’t have any matching cardstock so back in the bin it went. I’d also say to just have fun! Don’t stress trying to be like someone else! Find your own style and practice, practice, practice. YouTube is your friend!
